Hellraiser:Revlations

Year: 2011

Genre: Horror

Runtime: 75mins

Rating: R

IMDB Score: 3.0/10 (830+ Votes)

Director(s): Victor Garcia

Writer(s): Gray J. Tunnicliffe

Plot/Synopsis:

Two friends discover a puzzle box in Mexico which opens a gateway to Hell.

Forethought(s):

* Sigh * this looks like total crap but I love me some Pinhead.

Fun Fact/Trivia:

This is the ninth installment of the Hellraiser franchise

The Breakdown:

The movie is a total rights grab. Rushed into production after Dimension realized that a contractual stipulation meant they could lose the rights to the Hellraiser franchise if they did not produce a sequel to 2005′s Hellraiser: Hellworld. I’m pretty sure most movie fans would have been able to guess all that by just watching it. This movie is just too unpolished due to a production time of three weeks which includes the eleven day shoot schedule. I don’t know why they just didn’t shelve it like the 1994 Fantastic Four which by the way had a bigger budget than this pile of poo.

ISSUE ONE:Doug Bradley was absence from the movie. This is the least of it’s problems. He could have been in it and it would still be shit. I would have loved to have seen Doug as Pinhead again but I’m really glad he did not reprise the role just due to the craptasicness of the movie. The new Pinhead looks bloated and the pins in his head aren’t even the right color. Oh and he’s in the film for no more than three minutes. Yes, 3 minutes! Hell, there were only 3 other Cenobites, two of which were Chatterers (not even Chatterbox) and get this a new fucking Pinhead. Yeah, Pinhead made a new Pinhead….WHAT IN THE FUCK!? It’s like the writer doesn’t know dick about the history of the franchise. The other three Cenobites were in it for less time than the main man himself.

Looks like Pinhead is holding in some water.

ISSUE TWO: Lack of gore. I’m not saying that there wasn’t any. What I’m saying is that it’s sparse. In past parts of the series we would get skin being torn off of different people and by skin I mean ALL OF IT. In this movie they only take bits of skin. And they don’t even really show the skin being ripped off. They show the character pull it off as if the slice was already done. In the movie we have two gun shot wounds (one that actually shows stuff),the cheeks of a chick being ripped open, one head bashing (just some blood pools up), one slicing of the face and one skinless man. There may be one or two more instances of gore but not many more.

ISSUE THREE: Character development. Laughable just laughable. Two characters changes. The first one with in five minutes of the movie and the other about ten minutes from the end of the movie. The change wasn’t gradual at all. It was flipping of a switch.

ISSUE FOUR: Nudity. This is an R rated movie where a nice chuck takes place in Mexico because the dudes want to get some stank on them so it leads you to believe that we’re going to see lots of T&A but we don’t. If I recall right we only see two pair of breast and that’s it. Not even an ass shot. I have little issue with a horror movie not showing skin unless the reason for the characters going somewhere is to get some skin.

A mini Pinhead...DAMNIT!!

It can’t be all that bad can it? It has to have some good to it right? Well, actually it does. Two things really. The quality of the cam work. The Cam work was done surprisingly well. Everything was well centered and in focus. There wasn’t really any out of the normal type of shots used and my guess is because of time restraints. And the sound was quite good. It’s really sad that I used those two as the GOOD in the movie.

The Verdict:

I can’t really think of any other reason to watch this other than you love the Hellraiser series.

I give this movie 2 pins out of 5.

Panic Button

Year: 2011

Genre: Horror/Thriller

Runtime: 95mins

Rating: Unrated

IMDB Score: 5.1/10 (900+ Votes)

Director(s): Chris Crow

Writer(s): Chris Crow,Frazer Lee,John Shackleton and David Shilliteo

Plot/Synopsis:

Four young people win a competition of a lifetime head off on an all expenses paid trip to New York, courtesy of social network All2gethr.com. As they board the private jet, they are asked to relinquish their mobile phones and take part in the in-flight entertainment – a new online gaming experience

Forethought(s):

Sounds like it could be like Hellraiser:Hellword or perhaps it’s more like Saw. I hope it’s like Saw, I love that series.

Fun Fact/Trivia:

This is the 2nd movie that Chris Crow has directed and the second movie he has written(first he has co-written).

The Breakdown:

Are you the same person in real life as you are online? Are your morals and ethics different in a virtual ecosystem? Do you think there is an all powerful watching what you do online? How bad have you ever cyber bullied? Why is Buck asking all these questions? Simple, this movie makes you question what you do online and makes you wonder just who is watching. If someone is watching what are they like? I hope nothing like the person in this movie.

This is a another movie who classifies itself as a horror but isn’t as far as visuals goes. It’s more of a thriller with horror aspects. Sure, there are some violent deaths and shots of torture but if you ask me the real horror comes from the story itself and what it makes you think about with your online activities.

The acting was standard. You’re not going to see any award winning performances and you’re not going see anyone getting a Razzie nomination from this film. I think the biggest issue with the acting is actually the writing of the roles. Three out of the five main roles seem to be have written the same, bland, personality-less sacks of flesh. As for the rest of the writing I’d say it was pretty good. It gets dark after mid point and down right twisted near the end.

The over all production of the movie was good. You can tell they spent most of the budget on a high end camera and a person who knows how to work it. All the shots are framed nicely and there isn’t much jittering if any at all. There’s also some nice usage of hidden cameras that we don’t see much.

The Verdict:

The movie isn’t the greatest and is far from being horrible it’s just that once you watch it you’ll most likely forget a lot of the things that happen just because there is no one to care for or really hate in the movie. The reasons why the winners are where they are are the items you’ll most likely recall from the flick. The movie is not worth a buy at full or even half price but if you see it on netflixs or between $5-7$ online/in stores I sat pick it up.

I give this movie 3 take offs out of 5.

Colombiana

Year: 2011

Genre: Action/Crime/Drama

Runtime: 108mins

Rating: Unrated

IMDB Score: 6.2/10 (17,200+ Votes)

Director(s): Olivier Megaton

Writer(s): Luc Besson and Robert Kamen

Plot/Synopsis:

A young woman, after witnessing her parents’ murder as a child in Bogota, grows up to be a stone-cold assassin.

Forethought(s):

Looks like a decent action movie and if it’s not at least there a pretty chick to look at while being bored.

Fun Fact/Trivia:

The film will be skipping theaters in Australia and heading straight to DVD and Bluray in early 2012.

The Breakdown:

Luc Besson has some good titles to his credit:La Femme Nikita movie and TV series from ’97),The Fifth Element,Kiss the Dragon, The Professional,The Transporter series,Taken and others so one would say it’s a safe bet that this movie would be action packed and have a semi strong story to it…well it doesn’t. It was a big let down. That’s not to say the movie is bad because it’s a well made movie it’s just not what I expected it to be. If you’ve seen The Professional then you’ve seen this movie. There was a lot of unnecessary story in the beginning of the movie. The first 25 minutes of the movie was about Cataleyas (yeah the lead character isn’t even named Colombiana) time as a kid and how she got where she today. It really felt like the writer was saying “hey this story is so complex that you need to know just how it all happened.” Small flashbacks would have been a much wiser since it would have helped the story progress at a much more natural rate and that in turn would have meant a better balance of action and story. The movie is definitely more story than action but the action it did have was decent. One thing that really bugged me was the lack of hand to hand fighting. There was only one scene of hand to hand and it was not filmed in a way that is enjoyable to watch. It was a lot of fast push ins and pull outs all the while switching angles on us. Think the Bourneseries.

Let’s talk about the action in the movie. There’s a chase scene in the first 25mins that last maybe 3-5mins then once the story comes to current-ish time there is a stealth scene in a police station;more story unfolds and more story then a very unaction filled action scene that involves sharks happens then more story and more story and more story then an escape scene with some bombs and bullets happen then some more story then the final anti climatic action sequence that has the one hand to hand combat in. Now that I think about this is more of action lite type of action movie. I’m actually getting pissed thinking about it.

Want to know about the story? Go watch the The Professional or read up on Batman or The Punisher (more Punisher in the sense of this movie) you could even just think about what you want to do if you were kid and saw your parents get killed and know the person(s) who did it. This is a revenge story that brings nothing new to the table but does fall flat because you don’t feel for the character since the character herself doesn’t seem to care about much other than just killing the person who killed her family.

The Verdict:

I have talked about the negative of the film but it was over all well made. It’s just that the story is played out and as viewers it feels like we were force feed what happened to the character because of the complexity. Oh and it lack true action. Do not expect Zoe Saldana to be a rising action star because of this movie.

I give the movie 3 bullet shells out of 5.

Earth Spirit

Earth Spirit

Year: 2007

Genre: Drama

Runtime: 83mins

Rating: Unrated

IMDB Score: Awating 5 votes

Director(s): Alan Gorg

Writer(s): Alan Gorg

Plot/Synopsis:

A trouble, dissipated city youth is influenced by an indigenous spirit to be drawn back home to defend the land of his ancestors against exploitation by oil and mining interests.

Forethought(s):

To honest based off of the last movie this man sent me (Hollywood Love) I’m thinking this one isn’t going to be good but unlike the last movie this one was selected for some film fests.

Fun Fact/Trivia:

None.

The Breakdown:

This movie comes from the same guy who did Hollywood Love and I hated that movie. I was shocked that he would want me to review another one of his films but he did so I did.

First I have to talk about the issues I had with the DVDs. Yes, you read that right, I said DVDs. So with DVD #1 I pop it in my DVD player and much like Hollywood Love it had no sound. I pop it in my PC and use VLan and it plays with sound but for only 43mins. So I use Windows Media Player and it plays past the 43min mark, however,I get major scan lines. So I decide to email Alan and tell him what’s going on. He decided to send me another DVD. So I pop the DVD in my player and still no sound, at this point I let out an audible sigh. I put in my PC and once again I play it using VLan and it has sound and even better it plays past the 43min mark, however, this time it has major scan lines. Instead of having Alan send me another copy or having him pay for me to watch it streaming (yes you can watch it streaming http://indieflix.com/film/earth-spirit-32748/ or here http://www.amazon.com/Earth-Spirit/dp/B006MNIT1Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1324614398&sr=1-1) I put up with the lines and just watch it. Now with these issues I have to say to pass on the DVD. I do not know if this issues are going to happen if you watch the streaming versions. For a $1.99 at Amazon for the streaming one I think it’s worth a watch but I have to say pass on the DVD because of the issues I had.

Now for the movie itself. It was a vast improvement over Hollywood Love. Much better acting, better writing, less dancing, no cheesy sound effects.

What really impressed me about this movie were all the high quality establishing shots. Since the movie takes place out in the desert for a majority of the flick we get some very nice birds eye view of the sandy planes via what I think are helicopter shots. These shots look so good that if you came in to the room while they were playing you would ask what nature show I was watching. And what’s more impressive more so since this is a low budget indie flick is that there was more than one of these shots. We even get one of L.A.

I said the acting was better in this than in the last movie I was sent form Alan but that doesn’t mean it’s great. It’s bearable. It, along with the over all look of the movie has a made for TV movie feel from the 1990s. There are spots were the acting is over the top and underdone but it’s only from one actor and the rest do a pretty solid job at consistency.

The Verdict:

As stated I can not recommend that you buy the DVD but I think at 2 bucks for streaming it’s worth it. It’s far from a great movie but it’s also far from a terrible one. All in all it’s not a complete waste of time like so many other indie low budget flicks are.

I give this movie 2 green planets out of 5.

Silent Night,Zombie Night

Silent Night,Zombie Night

Year: 2009

Genre: Horror

Runtime: 83mins

Rating: R

IMDB Score: 5.9/10 (194 Votes)

Director(s): Sean Cain

Writer(s): Sean Cain

Plot/Synopsis:

A week before Christmas a viral outbreak turns the citizens of Los Angeles into the walking dead.

Forethought(s):

The zombies look neat and there is a fat zombie Santa in the trailer so this should at least be an OK zombie flick.

Fun Fact/Trivia:

Filming was halted briefly when the LAPD arrived by foot, car, and helicopter because a concerned citizen mistook the zombies and actors with weapons as gangs going at it.

The Breakdown:

I love zombie movies, always have and always will. This one wasn’t really a zombie movie and I will get to way in a bit but first I have to say the camera work was good with your typical shots and a few ¾ over head shots. And the music was solid as well. They took some Christmas tunes and did them in a metal type of way. It was quite neat.

The story is one that we’ve all seen before in zombie flicks so to really talk about it would a waste. I will say they did some new things to the zombies that I don’t like and that leads me into why I don’t feel this is a true zombie movie.

Reason for this not being a zombie movie:

  1. They can’t see at night but can smell you. I will admit I liked this idea when The Walking Dead used it last season but I think I only really liked it because of how they made it so the zombies wouldn’t smell ya. In this movie they use some type of hunters spray to kill the smell.

  2. They attack each other.

  3. They eat each other. This one goes against the #1 rule of zombie movies-they only eat the living- how does one live off the dead when you are the dead?

  4. They communicate with each other by grunting. This one I don’t have much of issue with but it is not zombie like.

  5. They seem to feel pain. There’s a zombie in the film that gets it’s hand chopped off and seems to cry. The only other zombie movie that I can think of were the zombies feel pain is The Dead Next Door but it’s been so long I am not 100% sure on that.

  6. There are two types of zombies;leaders and followers. This is actually a neat idea but wasn’t expanded on enough for me.

  7. The zombies plan things out. They will hide, wait and then attack you.

Some of the above are not bad ideas but when you use them all together I feel you get a whole new type of monster. These are not just zombies that we know.

Over all it’s not a poorly written movie but the characters lack any real personality. To me it just seems like the writer watched a bunch of 80′s “man” movies and ripped the characters right out of that time frame. I found myself not caring at all when or even if any of them were bite, killed or won. There was no connection and one of the things that need to be done in a zombie movie is write the characters so the viewers are connected in someway. This movie really could have been great if the characters were likeable or made you fill up with rage.

The make-up was well done, hell,in fact it was better than I would have expected it to be. The zombies range from just turned so all they are is a blue-ish color to the ones that have been turned for a while and have been eviscerated and everything in between.

The Verdict:

There are some real weak points in this movie and some fairly strong ones but one thing is for sure this is the only zombie movie I have seen that has taken place during Christmas.

I give this movie 3 headless zombies out of 5.

Wrong Turn 4:Bloody Beginnings

On December 17, 2011, in Movie Reviews, by TheBuck

Wrong Turn 4:Bloody Beginnings

Year: 2011

Genre: Action/Horror/Thriller

Runtime: 93mins

Rating: Unrated

IMDB Score: 4.3/10 (1,300+ Votes)

Director(s): Declan O’Brien

Writer(s): Declan O’Brien

Plot/Synopsis:

Follows a group of friends that decide to go snowmobiling during their winter break. They make a “wrong turn”, getting lost in a storm.

Forethought(s):

Can’t recall if I saw part 3 but I’m pretty sure I have. I know I’ve seen 1 and 2. This one looks like what I thought 1 and 2 were going to be so this one might actually be more than just “eh” guess I’ll find out soon enough.

Fun Fact/Trivia:

A crew member can be seen walking in the background of the fondue scene.

The Breakdown:

Let’s get to the two most important things about a horror movie:T.F.K (Time to First Kill) was around five minutes. And T.F.T.S (Time to First Tit Shot) was about 11 minutes in and what’s interesting about this one is that we get some black boobs as well. I watch a lot of horror movies and really do not recall seeing naked black boobs,at least in the last five years or so. It was refreshing and they were nice. There was also a nice little lesbian scene around the 37min mark with the black chick and an Asian chick. There’s more breast in this movie than I would have ever guessed. This isn’t a movie series known for tits but I sure as hell won’t complain.

Now that you got your perv things out of the way what about the blood, gore and story? Yes. That is all. Alright, I’ll talk about the rest of the movie.

Blood/Gore: There is plenty of gore in this movie. With direct to DVD horror flicks like this one is, you sometimes don’t know what to expect on the blood and gore front, well,I’m happy to report that we get a good amount of both. We get 13 kills (two happen off screen but we do see the bodies) and unlike a lot of direct to DVD flicks we actually see the death(s) happening. Some of the deaths include but are not limited to: a metal spike through the head, being quartered (this one is very Saw-esq and my favorite one), hanging by bared wire and a double decapitation via a wire fence. The down side is that the time from kill three to four is almost 30mintues,but,after that we get kills pretty regularly.

Story: The story is simple and direct. It doesn’t try to be any more than what it is and I love that about the movie. A group of friends get lost by taking a WRONG TURN and end up in a run down sanatorium where three inbred cannibals live and hunt for food….and the food are the lost!

Two other things stood out in a good way for this film:the camera work and the acting. The cam work was nice and steady, no shakiness at all and I love that. They also used a 360 degree dolly shot to give us a better sense of what one of the characters is going through and it worked. Rest of the shots were nothing fancy and I’m glad they didn’t try anything out of the normal because this really isn’t a flick where odd angles and over head shots would work. The acting was not award winning by any means but not once did I say to myself “I don’t buy any of these actors as the characters they are portraying.” That is something I don’t say a whole lot when it comes to horror films. Was there some over acting? Yes but not as much as you would think.

The Verdict:

Not a groundbreaking movie but it is a very solid horror picture that will satisfy your thirst for blood and gore. Wrong Turn 4 is a nice drive down horror highway with one or two detours but they’re minor enough where it won’t make you stop and turn around.

I give this movie 4 om nom noms out of 5.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Year: 2011

Genre: Action/Drama/Sci-Fi

Runtime: 105mins

Rating: PG-13

IMDB Score: 7.7/10 (95,200+ Votes)

Director(s): Rupert Wyatt

Writer(s): Rupert Wyatt,Amanda Silver and Pierre Boulle (novel La planete des singer)

Plot/Synopsis:

During experiments to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, a genetically-enhanced chimpanzee uses its greater intelligence to lead other apes to freedom.

Forethought(s):

I’m worried James Franco may bring the movie down but John Lithgow is in the movie and any movie he’s in get a few bonus points.

Fun Fact/Trivia:

This is the first Planet of the Apes in which Charlton Heston or Roddy McDowall are not in involved in.

The Breakdown:

Do you still have a bad taste in your mouth from the last Apes movie form 2001 reboot? Worry not, you aren’t alone but you shouldn’t hold that movie against this one. This one will wash that taste out no problem.

Let me start off by saying that this movie is quite sad ,in fact, I got misty eyed in a place or two. That was not something I never would have expected. It was due to great writing and a very emotional CG ape. The apes in this movie are mo-cap (motion capture) and that means humans wore special suites that translated all their movements to a digital model. This adds a true sense of realism when it comes to expressions which helps sell the emotions of the primates. And if you’re going to bitch about CG and live action I hear ya but the effects in this are so good that most of the time,I shit you not,I thought I was looking at real apes. There were a few times when you could really tell, they, the banana eaters were fake.

The writing for this part of the series leads logically into the ones before this. They took the experimentation road but not in the way one would think they would. Instead of trying to make apes better they are using them to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s. Well, the cure works differently then expected. The cure makes apes smart. Then near the tail end of the movie (for those that are slow anyways) we find out just how the humans become almost extinct in the other movies. Seriously if you can’t figure out why by say the 1hr mark you should just give up. While on the topic of writing, this movie has so much packed in it I thought at the 40min mark it was about an hour or so in. And I do not say that negatively. It’s nice to have a lot of stuff packed in like that, hell, more so when it’s done well like it was in this movie.

While James Franco did not bring the movie down he does not add anything to it make it great. To be honest no one really brought an A+ game other than the dude who played Caesar (Andy Serkis) you might know him from such films as King Kong (yes he was Kong) and those shitty ass walking movies The Lord of the Rings as Gollum. No I’m not kidding,I do not like that series. Even John Lithgow was upstaged in this movie by Serkis. Most of the acting was nice and solid but there is one actor I felt was just ham fisting it (Tom Felton) I have no clue who this dude is but I can tell you that if he’s staring in something then I’m most likely not going to enjoy it. What really pissed me off was that he got to say THE LINE! “Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!” He fucked the delivery of that line like a virgin in his lover for the first time.

Almost forgot, there this ape whose face,I shit you not, looks like Ron Pearlmen.

The Verdict:

Strong acting, great writing, some very touching moments all add up to a great flick. If you don’t like this then I think you may be more dead inside than I am.

I give this movie 5 planets out of 5.

TV Talking Points:12/5/011-12/9/011

On December 10, 2011, in TV Talking Points, by TheBuck

2 Broke Girls-And the Reality Check

Caroline and Max search to get Chestnut a job so he has a place out of the cold for winter. Peach tries to get a spot on “Real Housewives of TriBeCa”.

-Hipsters are not cool.

-I can see Caroline blending in way to well with snow.

-I like how Oleg didn’t even ask why Max wanted him to photo his junk.

-HAHAHA, good reason to ware two condoms.

-I honestly don’t know the difference between old money and new money.

-Kitten sneezes and farts at the same time? I bet you could find that on Youtube.

-I have no issues buying Max dinner and calling her pretty.

-Never would have guessed Max is a spitter (when she spit the champagne out at Peaches apt.)

Glee-Hold on to Sixteen

Sectionals arrive and the New Directions face the Trouble Tones and one other group. The New Directions are short handed and need to find members. Rachel and Finn try to get Sam to come back, and Tina defends Mike’s dreams.

-Seems a little weird that Finn is the one in the Glee home talking about star power.

-I think what Finn said is true “even homeless people have facebook.”

-His hair is very CW and is bugging the hell out of me.

-HAHA “You smell like craigslist “

-Sams dad is Pa Kent from Smallville!!

-God damn, the first song is a country one. I want to rip out my ear drums.

-I wonder what other books Santana has with a bunch of insults.

-The “body roll” is not sexy.

-Blaine is having a macho moment by boxing.

-Aww,Tina should have just walked out and left the DVD.

-Both of the glee clubs outfits are ugly.

-I don’t get the tuba and oboe joke that Santana made.

-I like the outfits that the Unitrads are wearing.

-The Troubletones performance was good but one of the dancers seemed to be a little bit ahead of everyone else.

-I want to say the 3rd song from the real glee club is from New Edition but I really don’t know.

-The last song of the ep really made it feel like a finale ep.

Grimm- Dense Macabre

Hank and Nick check out the death of a teacher and discover that one of his students is involved: Nick discovers that the presence of a new Grimm is having repercussions on the creature community.

-What the hell are the clubbers chanting?

-I’d be a bit freaked out seeing all those rats in my car like that.

-I hate when a fridge dies.

-The dad rat really looks like the cg rat.

-I love how Hank has a weak stomach with rats.

-Call back to ripping the arm off was nice.

-The plumber crack was unpleasant.

-Yeah, I wouldn’t have said no to Ms.Shade either.

-The voice of dj with the cat head on is creepy.

-Wu is right, someone had to go there with the bad pun.

-The old rat in the pizza box joke….classic!

Bones- The Twist in the Twister

The body of a “storm-chaser” found after a tornado doesn’t seem unusual until a video found that was filmed during the disaster shows a more sinister culprit than Mother Nature. Elsewhere, a desperate Angela and Hodgins turn to her father for child-care assistance, and Brennan must cope with Booth’s over-protectiveness everywhere she goes.

-LOL, she lasted two days at camp due to a horror movie.

-Goodness,that coffee Hodgins has is freaking huge. That’s like a big gulp.

-AHHAHAHAH, I’m pretty sure Booth trying to help Bones up was the way she got a bun in the oven.

-How funny would it have been if Angela finished the facial reconstitution but it was that of a horror monster?

-A chaser chaser, really?

-Wow, a real big pricey special effects scene (the tornado scene).

-She was so happy she hugged Sweets because of the rainbow, why?

-I like the sleepy time tornado.

-Crazy dude redheaded friend is very nice looking.

-There was a lot of wierd shots and angles used in this ep. Some worked some didn’t.

Person of Interest- Get Carter

Reese, Finch, and Fusco must protect Detective Carter without giving away their true identities, when the Machine gives them her name as the next Person of Interest.

-Bout time P.o.I comes back. I’ve missed the show.

-So Carter was an interrogation specialist for the Army?

-It sounded like Fusco told Carter that his name was Lion-O.

-I don’t like it when Reese calls Finch Harold.

-Only 300 threats? Sounds like she’s a poor Det. lol.

-I wonder how many cop are truly are dirty.

-I bet Eddie (the wife beater) is shooting blanks.

-Lol at the photos Carter had in the flashback.

-How is that Reese just walks around in the day time with weapons that look like they can take out a small gang and no one notices?

-Fusco is not going to be able to handle the two girls Hector having fun with.

-So Reeses “Joker” just walked in and out of a building full of cops and no one saw him? Well, to think of it I’m not sure just how many people have seen his face.

Red State

Year: 2011

Genre: Action/Horror/Thriller

Runtime:88mins

Rating: R

IMDB Score: 6.4/10 (8,700+ Votes)

Director(s): Kevin Smith

Writer(s): Kevin Smith

Plot/Synopsis:

Set in Middle America, a group of teens receive an online invitation for sex, though they soon encounter fundamentalists with a much more sinister agenda.

Forethought(s):

Kevin Smith doing a horror flick? Shit, this is going to be really bad or really good.

Fun Fact/Trivia:

The budget for the special effects department was $5000.

The Breakdown:

I’m sure a lot of you will say that this is not a horror movie, hell,I even agree with you to a point because you are some what right. This isn’t a slasher or a monster movie or torture porn of any type but what it is, is current social events that are actually happening in the world today and I find that quite scary. So I am deeming this horror at a very basic level. I would definitely like to know what you all think about this being a horror movie.

The movie starts off innocently enough with a kid getting driven to school by his mom. The kid is late for class and he explains why when he gets there. Then there is a little discussion on these super religious nut bags (The Five Points Trinity Church and the reason why he’s late). I think most of us can agree that these types of zealots are quite dangerous.

Shortly after, the class is dismissed and the kid who was driven to school is now on a free period with his two best friends. The group of three talk about vag and fucking and this is also where the only nudity in the film comes from and it’s from a damn cell phone. The reason they are talking about these things is that one of the three has found a site that lets people meet other people who want to fuck. Skip a head a several minutes and the group arrives at the trailer of the chick who wants to bone. Let me just say if I was them and I got there and and I saw a chick who looked nothing like the one from the site, my ass would have turned around without saying anything and just left.

Fast forward about five minutes or so and we are taken to a church where there is preaching going on. The kind that only true haters can get behind. I think Hitler would have fit in very well with these church goers. It is also at this time that we get our first kill and some torture. All of the above happens in the first 20 minutes of the movie. One other thing, the preaching scene is long and drawn out. You will most likely be bored during this time. After the first killing, one of the other victims tries to escape, some people die,the A.T.F come in after a little bit and now it’s turned into a stand-off. Lots of gun shots for the rest of the movie.

There are three really good performances in this movie and that is so very uncommon for a horror movie. Hell, it’s damn near rare to get one really good performance in a horror flick let alone three. The three are Kerry Bishe’,John Goodman and Michael Parks. Kerry Bishe’ isn’t in the film for more than ten minutes total but she gives a very emotional performance late in the film that will make you say “DAMN!” I didn’t know she had that in her. To be far I’ve only seen her in the last season of Scrubs but if she gets some high profile drama flick, watch out, she’s gonna be an A-lister. John Goodman plays a role that I haven’t really seen him do since Roseanne, that of a well meaning man just doing his job. Most times when I see him he is the top tier leader but in this he is a field officer who’s just trying to do what he’s told without getting people killed. Michael Parks is a man that I’ve seen in a decent amount of stuff but could not tell you any of the roles he’s played just because they aren’t memorable. Well, this one is. He plays the preacher who spreads the words of hate.

One thing that really stood out to be because A)this is a Smith film and B)this is not a big budget horror flick, was the camera work. They used some rig which the name escapes me right now, but, it’s the rig that The Blair Witch Project made famous. You know the one where you get an real tight mid to super close up of the actor(s) running. Well they use that a few times in the movie to give us a sense of real dread in the victims. They also seem to use a few crane shots which are quite expensive from what I hear. Other than showing a ¾ over head view of the surroundings there was no point to using it in this film but it did look neat and it is something we don’t usually see in A and B from above.

The Verdict:

Well this was not really good nor was it really bad. It falls somewhere in the middle and I think most people who think horror will not be thinking of this movie since it’s a not a standard horror flick but it was mildly+ entertaining with some really good acting and a story that even if you are unaware is hitting home way to much for comfort. I say give this a cheap try.

I give this movie 3 crazy ass zealots out of 5.

Attack the Block

Attack the Block

Year: 2011

Genre: Comedy/Horror/Sci-Fi

Runtime: 88mins

Rating: R

IMDB Score: 6.8/10 (19,200+ Votes)

Director(s): Joe Cornish

Writer(s): Joe Cornish

Plot/Synopsis:

A teen gang in South London defend their block from an alien invasion.

Forethought(s):

This looks like a Shaun of the Dead type of movie but with alien(s) and if that’s the case this should be a good movie.

Fun Fact/Trivia:

The writer/director was inspired to make this film after actually being mugged in real-life (much in the same way as portrayed in the film). He noticed his young assailants were as scared as he was, and started researching their lives.

The Breakdown:

I’m sure a bunch of you are wondering if this is a Shaun of the Dead ripoff and I can happily say that it’s not. It’s similar (very much so) but is it’s own thing. The thing that really makes this it’s own movie is the writing. It’s more drama/sci-fi/horror where as SotD was pretty split with comedy and horror. Don’t get me wrong there is humor in this movie but you can tell the writer wasn’t focusing on the funny as he was on the sci-fi and horror aspect of the writing.

I would like to do a fair amount on the acting in the movie but sadly I can not. The reason being is that the focal group of the movie have really heavy accents and use a lot of slang U.K terms that to be honest I just don’t get. I can guess as to what some are due to the context in which they are used but I’m still not 100% sure I’ guessing them right. If anyone out there can tell me what “murk” and “bruv” means I would be grateful. Now, not everyone had a thick accent and they did a decent job, nothing outstanding but nothing that would lessen the joy you get from watching this movie. Nick Frost has a role in the movie but it’s no where near what it was in SotD and I think that was done to distances this movie from that one. While I can understand doing that I think he would have added that comedic value I feel the movie was lacking.

One of the best things about this movie is that they don’t waste time by not showing us what the monsters is unlike some other movie that came out this year. And the monsters are pretty bad ass looking. Think of a gorilla the size of a large dog with no eyes and a very round mouth that had a few rows of glow in the dark teeth that can tear you apart like a fat man goes through on wings….mmmm hot wings… I was surprised at how much I liked the creatures. I just wasn’t expecting such neat looking visuals I guess. There’s a scene where the monster rips the throat out of one of it’s victims and we see tendons and veins and blood squirting everywhere like a pornstar. My pick for best looking shot is near the end and since it’s near the end I won’t give to much away but it involves the outside of a building a monsters climbing. That shot was just lovely.

I’ve seen a lot of hate online about this film due to the rampant racism that people somehow see in this movie and to all those people out there I have this to say:did you and I watch the same damn flick? Get your heads out of your asses.

The Verdict:

I really think people who tend not to like sci-fi and horror will still like this film. There’s some good drama in it, there’s a mix of likeable and hated characters, the visuals while can be to much for some are used in the less is more area. At the few least this is a rent.

I give this movie 4 space dogs out of 5.
