Gun Town

Year:2009

Genre: Action/Horror/Mystery/Thriller/Western

Runtime: 78mins

Rating: Unrated

IMDB Score: 8.0/10 (5 Votes)

Director: Lee Vervoort

Writer: Lee Vervoort

Plot: When five high school graduates take a road trip to nowhere, it’s draw or die as they stumble upon what was an abandoned tourist trap.

Audio: Pass Minus. You have your typical indie film audio issues in this one like the mic being to far away from the actors at points and it sounding like the audio was recorded in a spacious bathroom with no dampeners. The good thing about the audio is that the issues are not happening thru the whole flick. The sound-track was not very good. A lot of the music had an old time western feel with a hint of rock tossed in. Not really a good combo if you ask me.

Acting: Fail Plus. I have found not one but two actors worse than myself in the same movie! One of them is a dude who seems like he should be the offspring of Jerry Lewis due to his over acting and body movements. The only truly bad actor gets the most screen time, isn’t that always the fucking case? There is no way this chick should have gotten so much play, she goes from dumb valley girl sounding to bad ass bitch with the flip of a very sticky switch. I have to think the only way this chick got the part was because she has some kind of leverage over the casting director. It was painful to watch this person “acted” not only was her attitude inconsistent her body language gave off a completely different message than the words coming out of her month. Fuck if she wasn’t so nice to look at I would say that she should never be on camera again. The rest of the cast wasn’t bad, but they also weren’t good. I can really see most of them getting small roles from time to time if they just keep getting experience in low budget flicks like this. Oh but the chick who gives pain to Frank Sr. in a flashback should also stay away from acting til she takes some classes.

Visual: Pass Minus. This barely passes. If it wasn’t for the cheap blood effects and the low cut tops on the ladies I would have totally failed this area. They could have upped the blood level by five and it would still just be passing by the hair on my balls. I really don’t think more than a cup of fake blood -which by the way looked like Kool-Aid- was used. I would have loved to seen both of the young ladies topless especially the blond. I do have to say that Frank Sr. was pretty creepy looking and that did help out the movie a lot in my opinion.

Writing: Pass Minus. I liked the characters they were different from each other and not just the archetype of horror movies. I think I would have enjoyed the dialog more if the actors could just deliver a line without it seeming like it was forced or if they just knew their lines. I laughed at one thing so much and that is the fact that there is one black person in the whole film and he’s the first to die….can you say HORROR? To you non-horror fans out there that is not a racist thing, it is an on going joke in horror movies. Look it up. Any horror fan who watches this movie can tell where the writer drew inspiration from. Not at all an original story.

Breast part of the movie.

Ed/Dir: Pass. The cam work and the direction are very freaking good in this film: I would even say the cam work is better than a lot of mainstream movies I watch. The use of a tripod was definitely in affect and that gets so many points from me. The editing itself could have used some work. The “old west” filter that was picked for the start of the film was not a good choice since the took such a high quality shot. It was just to clean. The editor should have also picked a different font type of the opening line cards of the movie, it was a little harsh on the eyes. Also some of the cut were way to short, case in point was at the very end when Franks face is shown but for less than half a second before we end onto the next part of the scene. Now I’m sure many of you are saying that sounds like a lot of issues to have and still give this a passing mark. It does sound that way but trust me they aren’t huge mistakes and they do not happen a lot so it doesn’t affect the grade by much. Plus I really loved the cam work.

Final Feelings: The movie just passes: it could have used tits, more blood and effects and batter actors. I didn’t want to turn the movie off ten minutes after watching and when that’s said about an indie flick that’s good. Before I go I have to say something about the genres. This was not a western or a thriller or even an action movie and it just barely qualifies for a horror. I just felt like the genres listed up top are a fucking lie. The only MYSTERY about this whole movie is why one of the genres listed is a mystery.
